YAUPON HOLLY , a native plant,llex vomitoria Is an evergreen shrub or tree loved for the colorful berries it produces on the female plants. Yaupon is dioecious which means that male and female flowers are born on separate plants; male yaupon hollies do not produce berries. The leaves of the yaupon contain caffeine. In fact, the yaupon boasts the highest caffeine content of any plant native to North America.
Upright, fast growing, spreading, evergreen plant can either be a bush or tree. Reaching 15-25 feet tall and the same wide. Can be trimmed into a hedge in landscaping. Is dioecious- meaning there are separate male and female plants. If there are flowers and red berries- it is a female. Grows from full sun to full shadeseaside and swamps.
Uses: hedge, parking lot islands, container on patio’s, bonsai. Leaves can be dried and made into tea- contains more caffeine than coffee. DO NOT eat the berries- hence the name “vomitoria”.
Fun Facts: This is a native ‘invasive’. Due to the leathery waxy leaves- most chemicals will not work. Leaves have oils in them that are highly volatile- meaning they are fire dominant. Fire is the best tool for controlling spread. Great for wildlife. Will burn hot and clean- leaving very little to no ash.
